FAQs
We know you've got options for travel companies, and we're excited you're considering Buoyant to help you connect with cool, people, places, and experiences across the diaspora.
Here are answers to some of the questions our kinfolk ask most. For trip-specific details, please check out individual trip pages.

We're a Baltimore-based, Black-woman owned and operated travel company, and for us, travel is all about education and liberation. We see travel as a critical component of Black freedom. That means we don't just plan trips to any ol' where. We're intentional about every destination, building a travel community with Black travel, Black economics, and Black joy in mind.
We design our trips with a mix of experiences that aren't 100% luxury or budget. We exist for Black travelers, our kinfolk, who enjoy both types of travel. Think bougie aunties & uncles who still love a good deal. We splurge on a unique dining experience, but we also love street food. We adore well-designed spaces like charming boutique hotels, and we're excited to experience authentic, local connections that help you engage with Black history and culture.
On every trip, we support at least two (but often more) Black-owned businesses, from photographers to tour guides to restaurants and beyond. Most importantly, we center Black history and culture in every destination we visit because we believe in the power of global Black connection. Plus, solo travelers get their own room at no extra charge. What can we say? They not like us.

Community Trips: Black travel meetups where we organize the logistics so you can attend popular Black events, festivals, and cultural celebrations without the stress of planning. Think Afropunk, Carnival, and other global gatherings.
Custom Trips: From Brooklyn to Bahia, our private trip design merges your group's vision with our years of connections across the diaspora. Perfect for bach trips, birthdays, reunions, and corporate groups.

We don't cover airfare to and from the destination, travel insurance, passport or visa fees, excess baggage charges, gratuity and tips, alcohol, items of a personal nature (like laundry or souvenirs), and any optional activities you choose to do on your own during free time.
-
Yes! It's mandatory. All travelers must provide proof of current and adequate travel insurance 30 days before departure. Your insurance must cover medical emergencies, personal injury, repatriation, and evacuation expenses, including helicopter rescue and air ambulance internationally. We also strongly recommend coverage for trip cancellation, baggage loss or delay, and personal property.
Trip cancellation insurance may be the only way to get reimbursed for flights and other non-refundable expenses if you need to cancel or if we need to cancel, postpone, or reschedule a trip for any reason. Most insurance companies require you to purchase within 14 days of your initial deposit to cover pre-existing conditions or get "cancel for any reason" coverage, so don't sleep on this.
Check out our Travel Insurance page for recommended companies.
